I love Taylor Swift’s song Electric Touch wherein she says “it’s 8:05 and I see two headlights” and I absolutely hate how my friends bully me for only listening to Taylor Swift.

So in the spirit of discovering new things, especially those on roads less travelled by (a link to a study on song popularity vs likelihood to play on spotify at anna’s archive), I built “Lyric”.

This clock shows the time in the form of a lyric describing it. At 8:05, it might give us Electric Touch or it could give us Eight O’Five by Robert Plant.

Every minute, an opportunity to discover something you’ve never heard before. From wearing Lyric for a few weeks, I’ve already discovered some new favourites like 12:51 by the Strokes.

In building lyric, I learned a lot about parsing large datasets, as well as about the lack of discoverability for small artists.

I’m still ironing out the kinks to get Lyric to 100%, but you can expect an app store debut soon on WearOS, followed shortly by widgets on iOS and Android, and then a web version.

In the future, I’d like to make it react to the weather, location, and your level of activity, but I ain’t got all day for this. Maybe when the next round of LLMs drop.
